Srimangal - Introduction

Lying at the centre of Bangladesh’s fertile tea region, Srimangal sits amidst a landscape of tea estates, pineapple plantations and lush blanketed hills. Known as the ‘land of two leaves and a bud’, it was once part of the tea producing region of Assam in neighbouring India and today is home to the vast majority of the country’s 160 tea gardens, as well as the Bangladesh Tea Research Institute. As well as its abundant tea estates, the region is also home to a fascinating diversity of tribal people, including the Manipuri, Khasia and Tippra. The Manipuri in particular are famed in the area for their weaving skills and their traditional dancing. The other big attraction in the area is the Lawachara National Park, located just a short distance from Srimangal. A 1,250 hectare mix of deciduous forest and semi-evergreen trees, the park is home to the western Hoolock Gibbon, one of the most endangered primates on the planet.
