Accommodation

Claridges Hotel – Delhi (2 nights)

The Claridges has been a veritable treasure in Lutyens Delhi since 1950's. Amidst the rush of new modernity, the soul of The Claridges lives on. Refurbished, redesigned and revitalized, the hotel now offers the guests an experience that is new and yet so familiar.  The hotel is also in an excellent location just a short Auto ride from Khan Market and not much further to Connaught Place. Since the takeover of the hotel by Mr. Suresh Nanda, The Claridges has appointed new management personnel to blend tradition with modernity, which gives it a completely refreshing look. Leading designers of international repute have helped enhance the heritage and elegance of this four star hotel.

Royal Palace Houseboats – Srinagar (4 nights)

Situated on a quiet corner of Dal Lake, with wonderful views out over a lotus field, picturesque houseboats and the mountains beyond, besides Sukoon this is probably the most luxurious group of houseboats in Kashmir. Consisting of seven houseboats, ranging in size from the mega seven-bedroom supper boat, the Shalimar Palace, to the two-bedroom Pigeon Deluxe, they are spacious, for the most part exquisitely carved, each coming with the their own housekeeper/butler. At the time of our last stay the bathrooms were undergoing a total modernisation, and in the case of the Young Crystal Palace they have even introduced contemporary showers cubicles that would not look out of place in a London flat. Compared to most houseboats, with their 1960 bathroom fittings, this is little short of miraculous. All that said the boats are quite close together with a busy walkway in front, so they're great if you're looking for an authentic Kashmir experience, but not so perfect if privacy is what you're after. But all in all a very good option.

Highlands Park Hotel – Gulmarg (2 nights)

Hotel Highlands Park is well-placed at the centre of all the attractions in Gulmarg - one of Kashmir's premier tourist destinations. It is a heritage property spread over 8 acres of flower-carpeted and pine-forested hillsides. Established in 1966, The Highlands Park has hosted Presidents, Prime Ministers and visiting royalty. Currently managed by the third generation of the Nedou family, the hotel cherishes its tradition of warm hospitality. It consists of a number of wooden bungalows, some with two rooms some with just one, and a communal bar and restaurant area. The truth is the place has seen better days but if you like India and are prepared to accept some of her quirkier element, you will find this hotel the most atmospheric place to stay in town.
